Posted January 5, 2016 Heating, Installation, Repair, Service When winter hits and we start receiving calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, most of them can be tracked back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system breaks down. Furnace Age The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself a bit of time to view and weigh all of your choices. Increased Gas or Electric Bills Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system. More Frequent Furnace Repairs The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system could be a better option. Strange Noises Have you heard any strange sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises near the end of their lifecycle. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced. A Dry or Dusty Home Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. A few other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
